Last Halloween, as a newly single Miami senior, I was just getting settled in the lazy swing of senioritis and the downhill slope toward graduation and life's new plans.

But then a Miami football player with a big smile and a bigger heart knocked on my door (ironically, I'm a girl who spent high school at marching band practice) and swept me off my feet. Our first coffee date turned into a 4-hour conversation, the kind that digs into the tough parts of life, shakes your world and changes your course.

It wasn't the right time, but it was perfect. Nobody expects to fall for someone right before a major life change, but that's how love seems to work. And that's how my low-key senior year got turned upside down and threw me back into this "New Dating Scene."

So with Valentine's Day just a quick trip to the florist away and Miami's Bicentennial Ball around the corner, MQ's third issue this year is checking out the "New Dating Scene," from Miami relationships to hookups and everything in between.

Not too excited about the teddy bears and candy hearts? See MQ's Guide to Surviving Valentine's Day (Page 34). For those old, tried and true relationships that need some extra spice, Amy Wachler looked into the sex toy industry (Let's Talk About Sex, Page 36) and Bobby Pierce has some romantic movie suggestions (Movies About Love, Page 32). And for the couples whose Valentine's Day budget will be spent racking up a long distance phone bill, you aren't alone (Long Distance Relationships, Page 29).

But love isn't always serious. MQ's staff tells all in our Date Wish List (Page 30) and digs deeper into the idea of the new generation's dating scene in "Dating Through the Decades" (Page 26). Needless to say a Miami date isn't the same night on the town in 2009 as it was in 1979. Anyone who's been in Brickstreet after midnight on a weekend already knows that.

Some things just won't change though - in the land of the Miami merger, kissing under the arch and walking up High street arm-in-arm with someone special just won't ever go out of style. Even if it takes until senior year to discover.
