Miami students can get caught up in their three student leadership positions, 19 credit hours, part-time job, finals week, job searches, and holiday shopping--and totally miss college.
2008 had everything to offer a Miami student: an engaging election that transformed everyday university life into an intellectual battleground; new restaurants and entertainment (Best New Oxford Restaurant, pg.14), life-changing professors (Most Influential Professor, pg. 18), and continued inspiration from our sports teams (Best Moments in Miami Sports, pg. 16). Were you really there?
Sometimes the answers, and everything you are searching for, are right in front of you. In "Under the Tuscan Sun," (2003) Lindsay Duncan's character remembers a childhood past time of searching fields for ladybugs. It's not until she gets tired, falls asleep, and wakes up in the grass that she finds them--crawling all over her.
College can be the same. In the search for the dream job, friends, guy (or girl), and enough money to fund it all, we can lose track. Maybe we already have it better than we think. Sometimes, by the time we realize it, it's over. So if you've been missing college life for college tasks, take a second to pause with MQ to reflect on 08. Have a relaxing break (see Holiday Reads, p.53), and come back ready to welcome in the long-anticipated bicentennial. Happy Holidays, Miami.
